2020年12月国家文物局启动文物建筑预防性保护试点工作。天坛成为文物建筑预防性保护试点之一，其文物预防性保护工作范围为天坛中轴线周边建筑。通过文物建档、日常定期巡查、专业巡查、风险评估、专业检修、成效评价、最终归集充实文物档案，围绕文物建筑形成全面闭环管控。实现了文物建筑“保护第一、加强管理”，为继续“挖掘价值、有效利用、让文物活起来”做好准备。通过高效对症实施文物预防性保护，及时发现需修缮的文物建筑，及早申请专项修缮。通过阶段性实施探讨预防性保护工作相关问题。
In December 2020，the National Cultural Heritage Administration launched a pilot program for the preventive protection of cultural-relic buildings. The Temple of Heaven was one of the pilot sites，and the cultural-relic buildings along its central axis were selected for preventive protection. A closed-loop management and control system has been established for these buildings. This included registration of cultural relics，regular daily inspections，professional examinations，risk assessments，professional maintenance，evaluation of work effectiveness，and data collection. The management and control system upheld the principle of “protection first，strengthening management”，and enabled the continuous value exploration，effective utilization and revitalization of cultural relics. Efficient diagnosis and timely detection of repair needs were implemented for preventive protection of cultural-relic buildings，so that early application for special repairs could be made. Moreover，issues of preventive protection were reviewed through step-by-step implementation measures.
