基础教育决定了国家未来发展的前景，内战爆发前，在识字率、女童入学率和教育软硬件基础等方面，叙利亚在中东地区乃至全球中等收入国家中都处在领先水平。内战爆发后，受战争与经济崩溃的影响，叙利亚基础教育体系迅速坍塌，儿童失学率居高不下，教学场所、设施破坏严重，教师队伍迅速流失。2020年，虽然在叙政府以及联合国等国际组织的共同努力下，基础教育重建工作有所进展，但依然任重而道远。
Basic education determines the prospect of a country’s future development. Before the outbreak of the civil war，Syria was at a leading level in the Middle East and even among middle-income countries in terms of literacy rate，girls’ enrollment rate，educational hardware and software environment. After 2011，the basic education system of Syria collapsed rapidly under the influence of war and economic collapse，with high dropout rate of children，serious destruction of school and facilities，and rapid loss of teachers. In 2020，although the reconstruction of basic education has made progress with the joint efforts of the Syrian government，the United Nations and other international organizations，there is still a long way to go.
