Since the Portuguese came to the east, the words “China” and “Cochinchina” appear in Portuguese literature in the 16th century. “Cochin” comes from the Hanoi native name “ ” in Annan language. It is also the etymology of Chinese “Jiaozhi”. “ ” means “Grand Bazaar”. In Portuguese literature before 1515,“China” means Guangzhou/Guangfu. So “Cochinchina” in early Portuguese means “Jiaozhi-Guangzhou” or “Jiaozhi of Guangzhou”. Therefore, the term “Cochinchina”,in the context of the Portuguese at the beginning of the 16th century, meant “Guangzhou’s Grand Bazaar”.
