作为翻译家的辜鸿铭是第一个独立将《论语》译成英文的中国人。辜译《论语》自1898年问世以来直到辜氏1928年逝世都未曾再版。事实上，辜氏曾在晚年多次修订过该译本，且有其亲自润色过的三个版本的译文存世而并不为时人所知。本文考察这三种英译《论语》珍贵文本与初版之间的关系，旨在揭示辜氏译文文本体系的内在脉络，并探讨在当时“西学东渐”的历史背景下，辜氏是如何通过翻译在某种程度上来实现中国文化的反向定位，以及儒家核心概念的反向迁移的。相互纠缠的文本之间所呈现的各种异同，也反映出在中西文化互动与对话的语域中辜氏翻译思想和翻译策略所蕴含的丰富面向。
Gu Hongming is the first Chinese scholar who completed the English translation of Analects all by himself. Unfortunately，this work had never been reprinted during his lifetime since its first publication in 1898. In fact，Gu revised his translation many times and there are three other lesser-known versions accessible to the academia. This paper aims to study the correlation among these versions，so as to display an internally dialogical logic，as well as the approach of “contextualization，” which can be seen from a hermeneutic paradigm that Gu adopted in his translation by following the traditions of biblical exegesis and exposition. The intertwined texts are indicative of a diversity which is a symbolic gesture toward the rich layers of Gu’s translation thoughts and strategies against the backdrop of 19th century East-West cultural exchanges and dialogues.
