In the early 20th century, the use of the suffix-hua(化)was rapidly developed in Chinese. Previous studies have shown that this usage was influenced by Japanese. Despite this, there are still many gaps in research on the history of the suffix-hua(化)and its associated lexical communications between Chinese and Japanese. This paper examines the history of the formation of the suffix-hua(化)and the lexical communications between Chinese and Japanese through a survey of English-Chinese dictionaries published from the 19th century onwards, and one of the most influential newspapers of the modern era,Shenbao(《申报》). The results show that:First, before around 1915,Japanese directly contributed to the suffixation of the character hua(化)in Chinese. This was evident in the importation of the Japanese word~ka(~化)into Chinese around 1900 in dictionaries and newspapers, and later in the field of chemistry,where-hua(化)became an essential element in the nomenclature of compounds. Second,in the 1920s,with the completion of the New Culture Movement(新文化运动),the modern Chinese lexical system was basically formed with two-character words as its centre, and the character hua(化),which signifies “change and evolution”,was combined with many new words. The use of the suffix-hua(化)rapidly developed and became widespread in Chinese.
