In February 2022,Russia launched its special military operation against Ukraine in defense of its traditional sphere of influence. The outbreak of the armed conflict spelled the end of the post-cold war European-Russian and American-Russian relationship paradigms. France has since jettisoned its engagement stance and opted for containment. The drivers behind the Zeitenwende of French Russian policy are arguably threefold, namely, the radicality of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, the rally-to-the flag effect of such armed conflict, and the proxy war dynamics inhering in the same. The Russian policy reversal by France stands out for its three-pronged response, mixing nuclear deterrence maneuver, hybrid war confrontation and local retrenchment. Such policy U-turn is likely to exhibit a trio of development trends, namely,a metamorphosis into a “long war”,the unleashing of a global nuclear arms race and a replication to the Asia-Pacific.
