“The other” is an important term in postcolonial theory, and a subjective expression of the colonizer to the colonized. Under the influence of colonial mentality,“the other” theory became the theoretical basis for colonial expansion and plunder. Based on the data left by Captain Cook during his voyage in the Pacific Ocean, this paper discusses how Cook described the aboriginal people in the Pacific region as the “other” image when he observed and communicated with the local aborigines, revealing the characteristics of the “other” image of the early colonists and the evolution of the “other” theory.
