Japan’s main approaches to carbon sequestration are divided into two categories:CCUS and ecosystem carbon sequestration. Although Japan took the lead in the field of CCUS,its development has been slow, and there is only one demonstration project in Tomakomai, and other projects are essentially in the stage of pre-feasibility study and preliminary test. Nevertheless,CCUS has huge potential for enhancing carbon sequestration capacity, and it can be expected that the related industries will have significant growth after the technology is improved. Ecosystems represented by forests and oceans have a large-scale inventory of carbon sequestration capacity, although their growth is not as robust as CCUS,but if they are properly protected and developed, they will play a crucial role in the field of carbon sequestration in the future, and at the same time, with the continuous improvement of industrial level, the exploitation technologies of wood, woody biomass, seaweed and other products will be continuously improved, and various products derived from CO2 conversion will also make production and life more sustainable and convenient. China can adopt Japan’s practices in the domains of CCU marketization, wood consumption, and wood biomass valorization, and pursue a strategy of carbon sequestration industrialization that is tailored to its specific context and circumstances.
