In recent years，historians of overseas Chinese history have turned their attention to the specific media that convey the information they are interested in and try to understand the connections between the physical and technological attributes of media and their political，economic，cultural，and social significance. In the fields of overseas Chinese modern history and contemporary history，there has been a shift from “media as an object” to “media as a method” in research. The study of media history in overseas Chinese modern history involves case studies such as lithographic printing，slide shows，telegrams，and films，with a greater emphasis on the materiality of existing media and the production processes of specific media products. In the field of media research in contemporary history，scholars explore the relationships between technology and politics，materiality and politics，aesthetics and politics，focusing on the material characteristics of media and official cultural products，as well as their mediation functions，while maintaining their mediality and individual experiences as sources of meaning，transcending the conventional propaganda paradigm. Scholars have begun to discover that a genuine media history research approach can bring unique perspectives and insights to the study of Chinese history.
