During the first half of the 16th century, the Spanish and the Portuguese, together with the businessmen in Jiangsu,Zhejiang,Fujian,Guangdong and Huizhou, business Groups of Japan and Nanyang, run their business for over twenty years in Shuangyu Port of Liuheng, which was known as “16th century’s Shanghai”. The island of Liuheng is located in the south of Zhoushan and you can get there easily by the waterway from Ningbo. It is the third largest island in Zhoushan archipelago with a total area of over 120 square kilometers. Liuheng possesses a deep hinterland, stretching coastlines, and numerous harbors. Taimen port,in the east of the island,is the first-class fishing port of China, while Shuangyu port,in the west of the island, enjoys a great fame both at home and abroad. Apart from these, there are other ports and bays, such as Da’ao,Sha’ao,Shizhutou,Xiaohu,Cangdongao,Tian’ao,Pingjiao,Dajiatun. In the 16th century,Pintuo,a native Portuguese, visited Shuangyu port and wrote in his works:“There are eight coasts on the island altogether so it is convenient for ships to berth there.” Therefore,we should carry out field archaeology to testify the correct location of the settlement of the Portuguese in the 16th century in Shuangyu port.
