In the 1990s,Australian post-colonial literature developed vigorously in accordance with the Mabo Decision, with Marion May Campbell’s third novel Prowler being one of the prominent works. Prowler portrays a white girl Tom-Tom living among Aboriginals, from whose perspective the black-and-white race disputes in Australia’s post-colonial society are revealed. Unlike most post-colonial writers,Campbell is not merely concerned with Aboriginal’s sense of un-belonging in the white mainstream society, but reveal non-Aborigines’ difficulty in identifying themselves. In her opinion,it is helpless to eliminate the uncertainty of one’s identity by imitating others or escaping from life. Only by confronting it bravely can people get rid of identity dilemma and realize self-identification.
