The British literary scholar Lafcadio Hearn （later known as Koizumi Yakumo） received a religious upbringing since hischildhood，which made him dislike Christianity. After came to Japan，Hearn worked on to the study of Japanese culture. The author uses a positivist approach to investigate Hearn’s views on Japanese culture，based mainly on his life and concrete works in the Japanese edition of the Complete Works of Koizumi Yakumo，as well as on Japanese research materials by Japanese scholars，and on the many cultural field trips the author have made to Sanin，Kumamoto，Nagasaki，Kobe and Tokyo in Japan. This paper concludes that Hearn disliked Western culture and loved traditional Japanese culture，believing that Japanese Shintoism and Buddhism were fascinating. He argued that Japan did not have to worship the West blindly，that the Meiji Restoration brought lowbrow utilitarianism to Japan，and that the main culprit in the destruction of traditional Japanese culture was Western culture，especially Christianity，which destroyed traditional Japanese culture. Hearn considered the old in Japan to be the new in the West，and the old in the West to be the new in Japan. But it need not be said that Hearn’s view of Japanese culture is clearly inclined to the view about “esteem the past over the present”.
