The continued spread of Covid-19 Epidemic since 2020 has brought different degrees of impact on the bilateral political, economic, and security aspects of the Philippines and Malaysia. In terms of political relations, the Philippines and Malaysia are generally more stable. Since Duterte came to power,high-level interactions between the Philippines and Malaysia have been more frequent, but disputes over historical territories and the delimitation of the Spratly Islands have resurfaced under the influence of the epidemic, thus affecting the stability of bilateral political engagement. In terms of economic relations, trade, investment, and tourism between the Philippines and Malaysia have declined significantly due to the impact of the epidemic, and bilateral economic indicators rebounded to some extent in 2021 due to the adoption of some proven incentive policies by both sides. Security cooperation is a key area of cooperation between the Philippines and Malaysia, which has been deepening under the dual driving force of increasing great power competition and national security interests.
