From the colonial period, the support and control in the early post-independence period,to the development and checks and balances during the Cold War,from the forced devaluation of the CFA franc to the announcement of the renaming of the West African CFA franc to the ECO,the changes in Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) monetary policy have continued to evolve. France’s monetary policy towards the ECOWAS has made various adaptive adjustments based on changes in the situation. The internal logic of the currency reform in West Africa is that the French speaking countries intend to master their own country’s independence, sovereignty and development rights, and get rid of the French control of the West African countries’ economy. However, there are still many challenges or uncertainties in the currency reform of West African CFA franc and ECOWAS. The influence of France on the reform of West African franc may be transferred to the new currency mechanism in a more secret way, resulting in a discount on the currency reform of West Africa. Prospects for currency change in West Africa will be difficult and uncertain.
