On December 12,2021,the French overseas territory of New Caledonia held its third referendum, which showed that 96.5% of the votes were against independence. In determining the date of the third referendum, independence parties have serious differences with the French government. The French government unilaterally decided on the date of the third independence referendum, which was considered by the independence parties as disrespectful to the Kanak cultural tradition. In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, the final turnout was only 43.9 percent, and the independence parties vote was only 3.5 percent, different from the previous two referendums. Due to the unique status of New Caledonia,France’s neutrality in the first two independence referendums has changed in the third independence referendum. The independence parties refused to recognize the results of the third independence referendum, questioning the democracy and legitimacy of the vote.
