The Undang-undang Melaka was first promulgated in the 16th century by the Kingdom of Melaka to regulate maritime conduct and trade activities. Later,it was adopted by many Southeast Asian Archipelago kingdoms and became a common maritime law in the Malay world. The numerous editions of the Code indicate its practicality as a maritime customary law. Its contents include identity hierarchy,ethical order,commercial custom,criminal law and so on,which embody four aspect of Hindu Law,Islamic Law,Customary Law and Maritime Law separately. It shows the integration of Southeast Asian multi-religious customs. The legal origin and structure of the legislative body of the Code are also characteristic. The study of this text is helpful to deepen the understanding of early Southeast Asian legal history,religious and cultural history,and broaden the field of comparative jurisprudence.
