In 2021,the COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacted New Zealand’s domestic politics and foreign affairs. COVID-19 management was still the main focus of the Ardern government. The adjustment of the COVID strategy led to complex public reactions and even a reversal in public opinions. New Zealand’s economy was generally stable during the pandemic, but the Ardern government faced urgent economic chain reactions caused by severe inflation. Meanwhile, the Anti-Terrorism strategy and cybersecurity strategy were continuing concerns of the Ardern government. In terms of diplomacy,New Zealand paid more attention to its peripheral diplomacy with the Pacific Island countries as the core while advocating for multilateralism and a rules-based international system. New Zealand also consoli-dated and developed omnidirectional diplomacy and tried to make a nuanced balance under the US-China competition.
