Culturally, Chinese values are deeply embedded in many aspects of Cambodian society. However, China’s such status in Cambodia is surrounded by renewed controversies. While the government warmly welcomes Chinese aid, because it comes with no strings attached, many experts still have concerns. With such controversies, it is relevant and signifi cant to assess the roles that China has played and continues to play in Cambodia’s socio-economic development. This paper will look at the brief history of Cambodian-Chinese relations, the arrival of Chinese people and Chinese culture in Cambodian society, and the cultural cooperation between the two countries.
