China is one of the developing countries as the front runner to achieve the goal of halving the proportion of extremely poor people (people spending less than $1.25 per capita per day), from 60.2% in 1990 to 7.9% in 2010. China accounted for 12.9% of extremely poor population in the world from 37.6% in 1990, and the proportion further dropped to 7.5% in 2015. In 2011, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commented on China’s delivery on the Millennium Development Goals: “China is the ‘No.1’ country in achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals, especially in terms of poverty reduction, making a major contribution to the world. The poverty rate in East Asia is expected to fall below
5% by 2015, which should be attributed to the tremendous development of the Chinese economy to a large extent.”
