In this paper, the author makes a short recall of the poverty reduction efforts since the 1990s and how these have evolved, along with outcomes on poverty reduction, using Tanzania as an example. The author then outline major global trends that contribute to the low effectiveness of the strategies for reducing poverty. It is concluded by proposing how SSA countries can accelerate transformation and poverty reduction in the 21st century.
