In sub-Saharan African countries rampant poverty and measures for poverty eradication remain the most pressing challenge in the policy circuits. Identified as a major development problem that needed to be eradicated at the time of Independence by nearly all sub-Saharan African countries, poverty still remains a major challenge in these countries to date. Despite considerable progress and effort in the fight against poverty since 1990, poverty still afflicts an increasing number of the population in SSA countries.This short note aims to provide a brief discussion on poverty trends and current poverty situation in sub-Saharan Africa, identifying the main causes of poverty,assess previous strategies aimed at reducing poverty and the extent to which the strategies have been successful. The note also highlights the efforts undertaken by the African Economic Research Consortium in this regard. This is followed by conclusion.
