After World War I, the British Army’s military commander, General Allenby, built a bridge for his troops to cross from Trans-Jordan to Palestine. To date the same bridge continues to exist and still connects Jordan with the West Bank and nowadays it’s the only crossing passage for Palestinians who live in the West Bank and wish to travel abroad via Jordan. But, during the years, it was renovated a few times from a wooden bridge to become a concrete one nowadays. The Israelis call it the “Allenby Bridge” referring it to General
Allenby. While in Jordan it is called “King Hussein Bridge” referring to the late third king of Jordan. Though, the Palestinians call it “Al-Karamah Bridge” referring it to the Al-Karamah war between PLO and Israeli Army that was considered the first and the biggest confrontational war at that time that took place in Al-Karamah town between Israeli army who attacked Jordan to fight the PLO presence in Jordan in March 21, 1968. Both sides claim winning and victory in this confrontation.
