The book is a case study of regional development of Quanzhou Bay in the long period of time. The research includes seven parts. Firstly, the development of Quanzhou plain in the early stage, the establishment of Shi Bo Si in the Song and Yuan Dynasties and the influence of political control in the Ming and Qing Dynasties on Quanzhou Bay society are discussed. Secondly, the family and regional alliance based on the local society of Quanzhou Bay has laid a good organizational and social foundation for overseas trade in the coming era of great navigation. Finally, based on all above, the construction of Quanzhou society in modern time and the changes of overseas Chinese societies are completed. Through the research on the development of Quanzhou Bay,the scholarly monograph highlights the “particularity” and “heterogeneity” of regional history, and avoids regional research from stepping into the paradigm of “Nation-State”,“China centrism” and “Europe centrism” from a global perspective. However, the specific impacts of Quanzhou society on the development of overseas communities are not known. Besides,non-Chinese historical materials are used less, especially the materials about overseas communities. On the whole, the book is still an excellent piece of work on the regional history of Quanzhou, which provides readers with a relatively complete view in terms of time and space and rich details of the development in Quanzhou.
