After the drastic increase of Chinese migrants in 1990s,their second generation has now started to enter into labor market after finishing tertiary education in Japan. They were grown up in a time when Sino-Japan political relations were strained, but many of them still preserve their Chinese nationality.
This paper will focus on the second generation of Chinese migrants in Japan who are born after 1991 and now studying at the University of Tokyo to analyze how they evaluate the rise of China from their life experiences. Most of the previous researches have focused on microscopic issues including their cultural adaptations, language acquisition, and changing identities, while this paper will try to develop new type of research by comparing their evaluations to the rise of China with those of Chinese students as well as Japanese students.
Interview results of 30 cases as well as Japan portion and China portion of Asian Student Survey Third Wave data(2018-2019)will be used to compare responses to the different dimensions of the rise of China in this paper. As a result,we’ll observe different evaluations to economic aspects and political aspects, which eventually creates greater diversity among second generation toward the evaluations of political aspects of the rise of China.
