2021 marks the second year of PRM’s Abinader administration. The Dominican Republic has seen a strong economic recovery, with one of the highest economic growth rates in the region. However, high inflation and contracted fiscal policy also created uncertainty on the sustainability of the rebound. The new government has made an anti-corruption campaign as its political priority, accompanied with investigations on several former and current government officials. On the social front, the new government has introduced a new social security program named Supérate, with significantly higher benefits but lower coverage. The United States and Haiti remain the diplomatic priority of the country, and the deterioration of relations with Haiti might exacerbate the bilateral conflict.
