Due to the severe impact of COVID-19 pandemic, various indicators of Vietnam’s marine economy slowed down or even showed negative growth in 2020. The production of marine fisheries kept increasing but exports declined, and fishing conflicts between Vietnam and neighboring countries increased. Oil and gas production continued to decline, but Vietnam announced that a new and super-large oil and gas field was discovered. Marine tourism was the most severely affected sector, with almost all international tourism coming to a standstill in the second half of 2020 and no prospect of recovery. Marine shipbuilding orders and deliveries fell while ship maintenance grew and military ship development accelerated. Overcoming adverse factors such as rising freight rates, marine transportation industry maintained an increase of port handling capacity, and the Gemalink deep-water port was open for operation. Wind power enterprises overcame the impact of the epidemic and accelerated the construction of projects, and offshore wind power generation will be a key field of wind power generation in Vietnam in the future.
