Vietnam suffered severe natural disasters in 2020 such as floods and typhoons，and caused a significant downward tendency on the economy，besides the influence by the COVID-19 pandemic. The country strived to achieve dual goals of both overcoming the pandemic and resuming economic and social development within the year. A comprehensive preparation was proceeded from top to down for the 13th CPV National Congress，which was held in January 2021 as scheduled. Vietnam also continued its efforts on party building and anti-corruption，while the National Assembly fulfilled its three major tasks，namely legislation，supervision and decision making on major national issues. The year also saw land disputes in Dong Tam，My Duc County of Hanoi outbroke again along with serious conflicts. 10 of the 12 major economic and social development targets set by the National Assembly were fulfilled，with a GDP growth of 2.91% in 2020，making it one of the few countries in the Asia-Pacific region and the world with positive economic growth within the year. Vietnam kept being active in diplomatic activities in 2020，with the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement coming into force，and several free trade agreements signed，namely the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement（RCEP）and the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement. The people’s life and society of Vietnam remained stable in 2020 under the background of COVID-19. Several prominent events were seen in 2020 regarding Vietnam’s cultural and social development. Donon Geopark was added to the UNESCO World Geoparks network. For the first time，Vietnam undertook a reform on socialized compilation of textbooks，which meant one curriculum could have more than one textbooks. In addition，the results of national population and housing census was released. Many places suffered from severe natural disasters and caused huge losses.
