20世纪初,美菲当局创设了持续数十年的马尼拉年度嘉年华,并邀请远东各国参加嘉年华商品博览会。为在海外推销国货,由当地华侨接洽,中国中央商务部门及福建、上海等地方机关、团体与商家多次参与马尼拉嘉年华博览活动。尽管海内外民族情绪与国货运动高涨,但马尼拉嘉年华的国货展览并未实现经济目标。虽然菲律宾华侨推广国货的愿望未能实现,嘉年华博览会在当时却成为推动中菲双边关系发展的一种重要途径。
During American rule in the Philippines,the American Colonial government organized Manila Annual Carnival for promoting social and economic integration of the archipelago country,meanwhile,colonial government invited Far East countries to Manila Carnival Fair to enhance economic ties and mutual amity. In order to promote Chinese industrial products to Nanyang and vitalize Chinese modern industry as well as to boycott Japanese products in Nanyang,Chinese government and provincial governments participated in the Manila Carnival Fair upon the invitation. However,although the Chinese national sentiment soaring and Guarding Home Goods Movement rising in China and abroad,the promotion of Chinese Products in the Philippines failed to meet expectation. China’s involvement in the Manila Carnival Fair demonstrated a mechanism for China-Philippine interaction in the modern era and the increasingly important role of Philippine Chinese in bridging China and outside world.
