In 2021,the grand coalition government led by the pro-establishment economist Mario Draghi came into power. In contrast to the previous coalition government of the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party, the foreign policy of Draghi government has returned further to the Western mainstream, with its multilateralism diplomacy being a key feature. Through its presidency of the G20 in 2021,Italy has actively promoted multilateral consultations on climate change, economic recovery, global fight against the COVID-19,the Afghanistan issue and so on. The EU and NATO are also the main platforms for Italian multilateral diplomacy. Italy has strengthened its collaboration with France and Germany attempting to play a greater role within the EU. On the European strategic autonomy,Italy has not chosen side between the EU and NATO but has adopted a flexible approach. China-Italy relations have been somewhat affected by the political changes in Italy, the China-US competition and the global pandemic, but some progress in bilateral cooperation has still been made. In the neighboring North African Area,Italy has exerted its influence on Libya and Tunisia through diplomatic and economic means aiming to achieve border stability and secure external energy supply.
