2020～2021年，持续的新冠肺炎疫情和美国的权力过渡成为影响加拿大外交最重要的两个因素。疫情使得加美两国边境继续处于关闭状态。鉴于特朗普对加美关系的破坏，加拿大对拜登政府寄予厚望，加美之间互动频繁，但很明显，拜登上台并没能给加拿大带来期望中的改变。“美国优先”依然会牺牲加拿大的利益，而且特鲁多政府在各个领域都受制于美国。在加拿大高度依赖美国并不断向“五眼联盟”靠拢的背景下，中加关系继续在低谷徘徊，但两国资源禀赋和经济结构的互补性还是发挥着维持两国经贸发展的作用，贸易额在疫情之下有一定提升。作为中等国家，加拿大一年来在多边主义和全球治理方面发挥了较多的主观能动性。其中，全球公共卫生治理、全球气候治理与推动核裁军都成为加拿大参与国际合作的重要领域。
The continuing COVID-19 pandemic and the transition of power in the White House of the United States are the two most important factors affecting Canadian diplomacy in 2020-2021. The pandemic has kept the border between the United States and Canada closed. Canada has placed great expectations on the Biden Administration in light of Trump’s damage to the bilateral relationship，and the two countries have started frequent interactions with each other. However，it is clear that Biden has not brought the desired change to Canada. “America First” will still sacrifice Canada’s interests，and the Trudeau government is bedeviled a lot by the United States. Since Canada is highly dependent on the United States and moving closer to the Five Eyes Alliance，the relationship between China and Canada continues to stagnate at the bottom. However，the complementarity of the resource endowment and economic structure of the two countries still plays a role in maintaining the economic and trade development，and the trade volume has increased to a certain extent during the pandemic. As a middle power，Canada has shown more initiative in multilateralism and global governance over the past year. Among them，global public health governance，global climate governance and the promotion of nuclear disarmament have become important areas for Canada to contribute to in international cooperation.
