In 2020,immigration to Austria continued to show an upward trend, and the number of refugee applicants bounced back to the level of 2019 in the second half of year. The fact is that the COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to immigrants in their integration to the local community as they are exposed to hardships in education, employment and social life. As the crisis lingers, the society grows less tolerant to immigrants. On the other hand, the pandemic has revealed the important role of immigrants in the Austrian society and promoted professional certification and volunteering among immigrants. By various means, the Austrian government has achieved some positive results in its efforts to help immigrants to get integrated in the local community, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will surely last for long.
