In 2020,the Dominican Republic elected a new president,with Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) candidate Luis Abinader winning the presidential election. PRM also won a parliamentary majority and local elections. Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD),which had been in power for years,suffered its biggest defeat since entering the 21st century. On the economic front,the Dominican economy has been severely hit by the COVID-19,with macro indicators contracting,yet a rebound is expected in 2021. In social aspect,remittances,largely from the United States,have somewhat alleviated the livelihood woes caused by stagnant economic and social activities. In the diplomatic arena,the U.S. remains an important political ally of the Dominican Republic,but multilateral organizations have provided assistance to the Dominican economy.
