COVID-19 and two hurricane disasters took a heavy toll on Guatemala in 2020. In the political sphere, the ruling party only had a weak political base, while the degree of party fragmentation was high. The national economy was in a recession. The total values of imports and exports have both declined, and the central government’s fiscal deficit has expanded. In terms of social problems,COVID-19 and hurricanes exacerbated both poverty and economic inequality and posed threats to food security. Crime rates declined in early 2020,but have climbed back to the pre-pandemic level by the end of 2020. With regard to foreign relations, the U.S.-Guatemalan relations were relatively tense because of the immigration issue, whereas economic and trade ties between China and Guatemala were strengthened.
