In 2020,Pressured by the COVID-19 and the economic crisis,the ruling party and the opposition strengthened their cooperation,striving to achieve a balance between controlling the unemployment rate and fighting the epidemic. In terms of economy,the Carlos Alvarado government focused on reducing the fiscal deficit in 2020,and introduced various measures to stimulate domestic demand and investment. The positive growth of exports in the free trade zone greatly contributed to the recovery of exports. The government also took measures in activity responding to the hurricane “Eta”,fighting the COVID-19,and alleviating poverty,with initial results. In terms of foreign relations,Costa Rica stepped up its efforts to deal with the refugee issue and maintained close relations with the United States by continuing to adhere to its attitude and position towards the Venezuelan government in order to win US support. It also cooperated with China in the fight against the COVID-19 and sought to promote the economic and trade ties with China.
