In the 14th year of Tao-Kuang(1834),the British East India Company lost its monopoly of trading with China.As a result,changes happened in the Chinese Customs Office at Canton,and there were influx of merchants from other European and American nations as well as free trading businessmen from Britain.Six years after this event,the Opium War broke out.
The present paper seeks to study the situation of the European and American ships that sailed to Canton in 1839,one year before the Opium War.The study bases itself on the contemporary The Canton Press information of “Shipping at Whampo”,a schedule of ships anchored in the port of Whampo(Huangpu).
