The result of the 2019 Australian election surprised the whole world. Mainstream media in the United States and Britain have exaggerated Labor's chances of victory, and have been less prepared for the Coalition's “Miracle”. This is partly due to the serious misalignment in the polls, and also due to the reporting preferences and values of the mainstream media. In addition,Australian voters are deeply divided over the climate change, which failed to determine the outcome of the election as expected. Morrison's victory is seen as another victory for populism and the Australia's election result is considered the latest step in a global “turn to the rightwing” trend. The traditional urban-rural maps on which Australia's major parties have built their majorities are being scrambled. The electoral preferences of voters have changed, while center-left parties have lost their ability to listen.
