作为20世纪最具影响力的成长小说之一,《魔山》与传统成长小说相比已显得有些另类。它打破主人公以线性时间成长为叙事线索的基本模式,代之以主人公在特定空间(疗养院)中精神和思想上的历练和成长,突出成长小说的空间维度。通过对空间的审美化、符号化和人文化,托马斯·曼建构出“魔山”这个具有多重象征意义的主题级空间意象,以空间为媒介呈现20世纪初欧洲个体的生存处境和精神状态,并对此进行文化的反思和批判。
As one of the most influential Bildungsroman of the 20th century,Der Zauberberg is a far cry from the traditional Bildungsroman.Der Zauberberg breaks the basic mode that the protagonist grows up in linear time as narrative clue,and replaces it with the spiritual and ideological experience and growth of the protagonist in a specific space(sanatorium),highlighting the spatial dimension of Bildungsroman.Via the aestheticization,symbolization and humanization of space,Thomas Mann constructs “the magic mountain”,a thematic spatial metaphor with multiple symbolic meanings,presenting the living situation and spiritual state of European individuals in the early 20th century through the space as the medium,and thereby launching cultural reflection and criticism.
