As one of the most influential Bildungsroman of the 20th century，Der Zauberberg is a far cry from the traditional Bildungsroman.Der Zauberberg breaks the basic mode that the protagonist grows up in linear time as narrative clue，and replaces it with the spiritual and ideological experience and growth of the protagonist in a specific space（sanatorium），highlighting the spatial dimension of Bildungsroman.Via the aestheticization，symbolization and humanization of space，Thomas Mann constructs “the magic mountain”，a thematic spatial metaphor with multiple symbolic meanings，presenting the living situation and spiritual state of European individuals in the early 20th century through the space as the medium，and thereby launching cultural reflection and criticism.
