The year 2010 witnessed the escalation of the waste crisis. Although waste separation is becoming prioritized, limited progress has been made in transporting sorted waste and mixed processing remains the common practice. The government, focusing on terminal processing, emphasizes waste incineration as a way of power generation, while the public attach importance to front-end waste separation and collection, making a sharp contrast. Incidents of leachate pollution highlight the deep conflict in waste processing, while the opacity of dioxin and heavy metal information indicate more covered-up problems. The three-decade-long practice of mixed landfill is to blame for today’s crisis. Only time will prove whether mixed landfill and incineration will create a double-crisis of a larger scale.
