This article summarizes the social order and crime issues in Macau in 2008.It provides longitudinal analyses of the crime trend in Macau from 1998 to 2008 as well as cross-sectional comparisons of crimes in 2008 among Macau,Hong Kong, and the United States (medium and large cities in terms of the size of population).Crime and crime rate in Macau show the following features, both the overall number of crimes and the crime rates in Macau have steadily increased;this increase may be attributed to the rapid growth of property crimes.Violent crimes,on the other hand, decreased in 2008.Among all types of crimes in Macau, juvenile crime,gambling-related crime, and drug-related crime are on the rise, which needs special attention from the public and the government. When the criminal justice staff allocation is concerned,Macau is in short of judicial officers including prosecutors and judges who process the rising criminal cases. In addition, the “Educational Supervision Regulation toward Delinquent Youth” has been in effect for over a year. Its long term effect toward juvenile delinquents, however,is still unknown.
