The chapter discusses the post-phenomenal development of Macau’s tourism industry amid the world financial tsunami which occurred in 2008.The impact on Macau reveals the heavy reliance of the mini economy on the gaming and tourism industry, hence,a high level of sensitivity and passivity toward any changes in the economic and political environment outside the city.Mainland China’s policy encouraging or contracting the travel of Mainland residents to Macau continues to have immediate and noticeable effects.Nonetheless, the trend of Pearl River delta regional integration and Macau’s being positioned by the Central Government as the “world tourism and leisure hub” offers opportunities for Macau to capitalize on neighbouring land and resources to develop further its tourism economy. The chapter also discusses the challenges and opportunities for future sustainable development.
