Surprisingly，the “Yellow Vest” movement broke out in November 2018 in France. It was a spontaneous movement，composed of a plural and unstructured mass. The movement resonated widely in Western societies and caused disruption in the majority of Saturdays during the whole year of 2019. This movement was marked by two key words：populism and violence. The participants and their claims changed over time. The French government adopted a dual strategy to deal with this hardly decipherable movement：channelling pressure with consolation measures and threatening police repression with the so called “anti-thug” law to calm down the situation. With more than a year after its first burst，the movement ran out of steam. But what we must see is that the factors that are at the root of this social crisis are far from being eliminated. The mechanism of its break-out and its evolution as well as the measures taken by the government deserve our reflection.
