在相当长的一段历史中，香港逐渐生发出来的本土意识与中国国族意识并行不悖。香港回归后，本土主义的发展却出现了转折，主要表现为右翼本土骑劫了“本土”，发动了对左翼本土的清算；香港本土意识逐渐有脱离国族意识轨道的趋势。在政治形势胶着的情况下，各种香港本土主义又在政治上有着整合的趋势，将“争取民主”与“立足本土”结合起来。然而，国家视野和民族情怀的缺失使得本土派不可能真正担负起香港“民主化”与“本土化”的重任。
