中国人自古重视家庭，传统社会生活模式均从家庭出发。近半个世纪，香港经济发展迅速，现已为世界级城市。经济发展自然推动了一系列的社会转变，家庭生活方式因此也有变化，我们难免会产生疑问，中国传统家庭观念会否和现代香港社会出现矛盾。为此，我们运用由香港特区政府中央政策组策划的“家人之间关系”随机抽样入户调查数据，了解香港人的传统家庭观念，以及探讨它与现代家庭生活素质的关系。研究结果显示，香港人的家庭观念仍相当传统，而且观念较传统的香港人，享有较高的家庭生活满意度，反映传统观念可和现代生活相融。当前香港家庭出现的改变，很可能跟客观环境有关，未必由家庭观念改变所导致。
Traditionally，the family was the basis of Chinese social life. In recent decades，Hong Kong has developed rapidly into an international city. Economic growth is leading to a series of social changes，including in the area of family life. In order to understand the traditional family values of Hong Kong people and the impact these values might have on their quality of life，we used the dataset from the survey on“Relationships among Family Members”，initiated by the Central Policy Unit. The empirical results demonstrate that Hong Kong people still maintain traditional Chinese family values. It was also found that people who hold more traditional family values are more satisfied with their life. This implies that tradition and modernity are by no means incompatible. Changes in family life in Hong Kong may be due not to changes in family values，but to objective environmental factors.
