News reports in Australia feature further negativity for the examined year ending 31 August 2019. The same trend can be detected in media coverage on China, which almost doubled during the three months of June to August 2019. Drawing on annual surveys and media monitoring results, this report depicts a changing landscape in Australian media and news consumption and explores how such changes have been enabled by rising conservatism, competition posed by digital(in particular social)media, adoption of media reform law and the ensuing acquisition of Fairfax by Nine and reshuffling and job losses that followed,as well as strengthened conflict between government-backed ABC and SBS with their private counterparts.
